Understanding Bees As A Roofer, And Killing Their Nests On The Job
Bee behavior is affected by the weather, and they don’t want you anywhere near their nest when rain is impending and humidity is rising, probably because their nests are vulnerable to rain. They, too, are friendliest during sunny, dry weather. Honeybees (and yellow jackets) tend to attack black and rough surfaces first. That’s why they go for your hair. Maybe they evolved in such a manner that they think everybody is a bear trying to steal honey, and so they dive for that part of you that looks like a bear. Knowing this, you would never approach a bee nest wearing dark, rough clothing. Beekeepers wear smooth, white coveralls. Bees generally will not go out of their way to sting you like yellow jackets will, but if the weather’s bad and you resemble a bear look out:
I have never destroyed a honeybee nest and probably never will – they’re beneficial insects. It’s easier to wear protective clothing mound them than it is to try to kill them.
